The
Desert Festival is a three days long extravaganza
organized by Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation
at Jaisalmer. Celebrated in the month of February,
the festival attracts people in large number
and is a major tourism attraction. The whole
city resonates with folk music when camel races,
folk dances and competitions are laid on primarily
to attract tourists and promote local handicrafts.
Fire dancers swaying to traditional tunes, a
turban-tying competition and a Mr. Desert contest
are the highlights of the Festival.
Folk dances
The characteristic feather of the Desert festival
is folk dances like moria, ghoomar, dhap, chari,
gair and kalblia. Watching women dancing to
the beats of dholaks and swaying to the tunes
of sarangi is an enchanting spectacle, which
can be experienced only by seeing it.
Moonlit desert
As the day progresses and the night dawns, the
entire town presents a stunning look in the
moonlight. The magic of the moon affects all
dancers and onlookers. Often equated with to
the belly dancers of Egypt, the Kalbelia dancers
attract people in great number and are hugely
popular.
The Tourism Department of Rajasthan doers a
commendable job while keeping in view of the
minute needs of the tourists who throng here
during the festival times. The department brings
good artistes of international repute to perform
at the festival.
The festival has something for everyone. Vigorous
camel rides, turban tying competition, the Mr
Desert contest and even a prize for the most
impressive moustache. Camel races and camel
polo are the added attractions.
So, next time you plan to visit this desert
city, try to be a part of the Desert Fair, which
is a true reflection of the romance and spirit
of Rajasthan. An unforgettable experience is
guaranteed for you.
