Religions of Rajasthan

Religion has always been very significant for the Indians since medieval age. All most all religion is represented at Rajasthan comprising of Hinduism, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians as well as Jains.

Hinduism is one of the oldest religions throughout the world. It is believed that we go by the rebirth and the birth that we get is based on our karmas and the rebirth will continue till we get moksha. The main figures of Hinduism are Lord Brahma the Creator, Lord Vishnu the Preserver and Lord Shiva the Destroyer. According to the religious books Lord Vishnu has taken ten births and some of the popular figures are Ram and Krishna which are the main heroes of Ramayan as well as Mahabharata. Vedas also play significant roles which are the oldest religious text of the world in the form of Puranas and Upanishads.

Rajasthan has its own myths as well as folklore. Rajasthani’s have been following some rituals from long years. All most in each village you will see some simple shrines. In the small temples stones are painted and set up beneath the trees as well as near the wells. Gogaji, Harbhuji, Mehaji and Baba Ramdeo are the folk heroes are respected. Some of the main temples as well as religiousplaces that have been established here are Nathdwara, Desknok, Ajmer and Pushkar. Every area has its own deity to be worshipped and in overall all forms of nature are worshipped.

Jainism is also one of the important parts of Rajasthan. This is not because the rulers of Rajasthan but mainly the followers of Jainism are more among the trading class as well as wealthy class of people. The main centers of the Jain pilgrims are Ranakpur, Mahivirji, Karera and Dhurev. There are some of the principles of Jainsim and they are Ahinsa, Aparigraha, the law of Karma and Anekant.

Islam is also found in Rajasthan which came to this state with the take over of Ajmer by Muslim invaders in 20th century. In Ajmer there was the headquarters of Muslim missionary. This is the place where traders, soldiers as well as craftsmen settled there.

The general religion followed in Rajasthan is Hindu, but there are other religions that pertain in this beautiful state of temples and myths. Rajasthan not only comprises of Jains, Islam but there are many more like Sikhs, Christians who have also contributed to add cosmopolitan essence for Rajasthan.
